ZGM  Making Adjustments

Zig Geno Motorsports and Les Smith have changed up the tentative 2009 Schedule.

We just got the car back from Dale Shaw Race Cars.  We got lucky in some aspects as we didn't have to replace the front clip as we originally thought.  We did have a bunch of suspension changes that we had to do  but all in all it saved quite a bit of work for us.

Dale worked really hard for us in order to minimize our expenses for the conversion.  Im pleased with the work he did.  I believe we have all the pieces parts we need to complete the conversion but we have some loose ends that we need to tie up first.

The number one priority right now is to finish up the truck so that we have something to haul with.  We are chipping away at some of the race car stuff that we can but as soon as we are finished with the truck it will be balls to the wall on the race car.

Our initial plan to run the triple crown at Lee were put aside when we knew we wouldn't be able to get some of the suspension parts that Dale wanted us to run until late May, so we decided to forego the Triple and instead add preliminary races at "the Mountain" and Twin State to better prepare us for the ACT shows we plan on running there.  We still plan on one show at Lee....hopefully to be an A&B Vending night and we are going to pick up the big late model show in Groveton.

Im looking forward to getting started.  Fluff is chomping at the bit....Mark is looking forward to helping us and it looks as though there will be a reunion of sorts with a bunch of the old crew stepping in to help out....

Talk to you all soon

ZGM sets 2009 Schedule

Zig Geno Motorsports with sponsor and co-owner Green Mountain Racin' have set their tentative 2009 schedule.

"As much as we really need to do a limited schedule this year and just get our feet wet I thought it would be cool to do some kind of points chase.  We thought it through and have decided to run a schedule of 6 races that will see us attempting the Triple Crown at Lee, along with ACT races at WMMP, Twin State Speedway and Thunder Road"  said two time prostock champion Geno.

The race team has consolidated down to one car. The veteran racer and long time crew member Jeff Roberts have been busy at work making preparations for the new season.  Zig Geno Motorsports will have an ACT legal motor from Butler and MacMaster powering its late model.  Zig and team will be taking the car for updates to Dale Shaw Race Cars within the next week. "I felt Dale gave us a really good car in the prostock and I am even more confident in his ACT/ Late Model program.  The car always worked really well for us and I can't wait to try out this stuff."  Its kind of a home coming of sorts for us.  Geno was with ACT in 1987 competing for Rookie honors against guys like Craven and Richardson.  He was only 17 at the time and the racer readily admits he probably wasn't ready for it but he feels he learned a lot then and has certainly become a better driver then those beginning years.  Lee USA and WMMP were both homes to Geno in his beginning days as well.  "I really am looking forward to going back to LEE, Yeah I'm getting old(er) but I still feel I have a lot to prove at both LEE and the MOuntain.  And Thunder Road?...well...that place just plain kicked my ass back then, but its been over 20 years since I ran there last.  I think I can get the hang of it this year...maybe I will save my T-Road story for another web rant....lol"  said Geno.

Green Mountain Racin' and its owner Les Smith are back on board for '09 and excited about the new challenges lying ahead for the team.  "Les is the man responsible for me being able to get back behind the wheel in '09, he is a great friend that has never done anything but give me the utmost support.  I will be forever greatful to him.

Zig and fellow racer Mark Patten have been friends for a long time, and at times the duo were even psuedo teammates during the PASS Outlaw innaugural season.  2009 will bring the pair back together with Zig spotting and crewing for Mark's limited PASS schedule and when Zig is behind the wheel the two will trade places and Mark will be crewing for Zig.

Mark and I have talked a lot over the winter months about racing and the direction that we both are headed.  Im looking forward to being on the radio with him.  He has a Shaw car as well and I think we can learn a lot from each other.  Even more exciting is having him on the radio with me.  Mark is a really good shoe.  He's won a lot of races and it will be the first time that I've ever had another racer on the other end of the radio.  I think his insights during the race will be immensely helpful.  I think both of our teams will prosper this year."  exclaimed an excited Geno.

Fans will see nothing but positive things from the Geno and Patten Camps.  Look for them at a track near you.

A Fond Farewell to the Dragon
A few weeks back there was interest expressed to long-time friend and car owner, Les Smith about purchasing the famed 2x championship race car more affectionately known as "the Dragon".  Until that point we had no desire or inclination to sell the car, we had raced it a bunch of times in '07 and had already begun preliminary plans to convert it back to its original ACT late model form for '09.

That changed when the interest was from former Crew Chief Bill Barnett.  If there was ever to be a sale Bill would be about the only one Les would consider selling to.  Bill had put a lot of work into the car during his tenure with Green Mountain Racin' and it couldn't be more fitting that the car end up in his hands.  He will be taking on the role of not only Crew Chief, but now as car owner for young driver Dallas Trombly at TSS.

So with the departure of the Dragon from our racing stable, we redirect our efforts now towards my car.  "Draco"  will now be the car undergoing the transformation from Prostock to ACT Late model.  I look forward to the transition and we are already making provisions to acquire an ACT late model engine as well as making chassis modifications to the car which likely will include a different front clip.

So ....the decision has been made as to what we will run in '09.  In addition to my commitment to crew a limited number of events for driver Mark Patten and his Patten Motorsports efforts with the PASS tour, and crew some races for Rich Bertone Motorsports it is our intention  to run 4-8 late model races this season that will ultimately gear us up to a more substantial run in 2010.

GMI is in the process of putting together all the components of a successful crew and race team and that will see the return of some old familiar faces as well as some new folks helping us out.  I couldn't be more excited to see what '09 brings all of us.

Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

What should we do??? Let me tell you this....we took this season off and it was horrible...I really wanted to race but time and money were the limiting factor.  It started out I wanted to run a limited schedule...then it was maybe next month and the month after....

I took this season off figuring I could get a lot done and save some money....well folks...I didn't get anything done and I am as broke as ever..lol

I have an incredibly persistent girlfriend whom I love dearly, and she was nagging on me pretty hard to go racing this year.  I, however, have come to the conclusion that I am too damn old to be going into debt for racing.  After much consideration I have determined what is going to happen next year.  I AM GOING RACING.....what does this mean..it means I have to come up with some cabbage so that Les isn't the only one footing the bill....but more importantly I am going to become exactly what the big idiot at All Star has claimed I always was....I am going to be a recreational racer...but a recreational racer is still a RACER....and it doesn't mean that we will try any less hard to win races....What it does mean is that even if we'd like to compete for a championship...if the money isn't there we won't...being a racer isn't about going broke to go racing.

Where would you all like to see us run next year.  Realistically it looks as though Canaan will be our track of choice...not because I have anything to prove there but it seems like that is the most economical choice for us to go out and have fun....racing has got to be fun....

So in saying that I want you all to know we will be back and I will keep you all in the loop....if you want to offer your input...feel free to drop me a line at gscott469@netzero.com
